Matthew Modine stated in an interview that the character of Dr. Brenner was written as wearing a plaid shirt and jeans. The bicycles the boys ride were retro fitted with parts to appear correct for the time in 1983. Small front chainrings and geometry for those bikes weren't around for at least another 10 years.
