As we have all seen over the past few years, Disney has gone mad with remakes, reboots, sequels, and live-action recreations of their old films. 'The Lion King' already has a cast and 'Mulan', 'Dumbo' and 'Aladdin' are very nearly a reality too, so now we are left to ask the big question: what is happening with 'The Little Mermaid'? Although we are still awaiting official confirmation, rumors began a few months ago that Disney had plans for their ideal Ariel, and that Zendaya was on the list of potential candidates.
With the idea that the redheaded princess could be played by a black actress, the Internet descended into madness, both with beautiful fan art drawings and messages of support, yet also with indignation, disgust, and, of course, a little dose of racism. Although it is still only a rumor, the 'Greatest Showman' and 'Spiderman: Homecoming' actress has made it clear that if she were to be offered the role, then nobody would stop her from putting on her mermaid tail and diving straight into the ocean.

During the Californian premier of 'Smallfoot', an animated film starring Zendaya's voice alongside that of Channing Tatum, James Corden, and LeBron James, Variety tried to quiz the actress about the rumors of a 'Little Mermaid' remake. Zendaya made it clear that they are still, for now, only rumors, yet that in no way means that she is not interested in the role; when asked whether she would like to play the mermaid princess she replied "I mean, yeah, why wouldn't I?"
If she doesn't make it under the sea...
If at the end of all these rumors we don't see Zendaya rocking the famous purple shells and tail, then it really isn't the end of the world for her as Zendaya is here on the silver screen to stay. She is currently finishing shoots for the superhero sequel 'Spiderman: Far From Home', and among her future projects, we can expect to see her in 'Finest Kind', alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, 'A White Lie', and the Sam Levinson series, 'Euphoria'.
'Spiderman: Far From Home' os coming to cinemas all over the world in July 2019, after the launch of 'Captain Marvel' (March) and 'Avengers 4' (May).
