'X-Men: Dark Phoenix', is set for release next November, and it already has its work cut out. The most recent film in the saga, 'X-Men: Apocalypse' earned around 543 million dollars worldwide, and is ranked 4th in a list of films with the most worldwide takings, the critics however, told a different story. Now, it is up to 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' to win back the many fans lost to the saga following the flop that critics deemed 'X-Men: Apocalypse'.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' director and 'X-Men: Apocalypse' producer and writer Simon Kinberg, clarified what he thinks went wrong and how the saga is going to continue so as not to make the same mistakes again. To begin with, one of the biggest errors was the attention to special effects. "I think we took our eye off what has always been the bedrock of the franchise which is these characters. It became about global destruction and visual effects over emotion and character." Kinberg continued that going forward, he's had to find a balance between the over the top effects and keeping the film somewhat grounded in reality.

'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' producer, Hutch Parker added, "there's a lot that I think is very good in the film but, as a whole, it was struggling to find ways to coalesce, narratively, emotionally and in terms of plot".

What can we expect from 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'

Actress Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey in the saga mentioned how "there are so many fantastical things in this movie... You still get that sense of escapism when people start flying but there's so much reality in it".

In short then, we can expect less special effects, a more 'realistic' storyline and a tighter focus on the characters. We'll have to wait until November 2018 to see if they manage it!

In the meantime, we can look forward to upcoming film, 'X-Men: The New Mutants'. The instalment will see the franchise take a brand new, frightening twist. The film is due to premiere on 13th April 2018.
