'Fast & Furious' was one of the most successful sagas to have been made in the past decade, with overwhelmingly impressive box-office statistics which had Universal eating from the palm of Vin Diesel, the creator of this adrenaline-fuelled franchise. Since the release of the last film, 'Fast & Furious 8', in 2017, three spin-off sagas have been given the green light from the producer. In addition to 'Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw', which will star Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, another of the approved projects is a new female-starred adventure whose screenplay writers have just been announced.
^ Lindsey Beer, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the new additions to the "Fast family".
We received the news from the mouth of none other than Diesel himself, who shared a post on Instagram featuring his sister, Samantha, the saga's producer, in which he announced the incorporation of some more talent into the franchise: "As you know, there are three new spin offs that we have promised Universal... well this week we heard a pitch for the Fast female protagonist driven spinoff I created in 2017, and you can tell by the smile on Samantha's face it was VERY exciting. Shout out to Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Welcome to the Fast family...".
Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Nicole Perlman both worked together on the script of the upcoming 'Captain Marvel', alongside Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, and Meg LeFauve. Perlman also co-wrote 'Guardians of the Galaxy' with James Gunn, which is one of the most loved films in Marvel's universe, as well as 'POKÉMON Detective Pikachu'. Rumour has it that she could also potentially be working on the new 'Black Widow' film as well. As well as being a part of the 'Captain Marvel' team, Robertson-Dworet was also one of the scriptwriters for 'Tomb Raider', while Lindsey Beer is known for her work with the recent Netflix hit, 'Sierra Burgess is a Loser'. It is truly exciting to see this celebration of female talent in Hollywood, with women in influential roles off screen as well as on it in such a big studio production. And considering their incredible talent and impressive backgrounds, this film is sure to live up to the hype.
All Hail Michelle
Across the course of the eight films in the saga Michelle Rodriguez's character came to be one of the stars of the story, but not to the extent that she really deserved. Rodriguez has continuously fought for the recognition and respect of the female characters in the male-dominated saga. When her character was nearly killed off by scriptwriters in part four of the franchise, it was at the demand of Diesel that she returned. And marking the home-release of the eighth film she shared a statement saying: "I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise".
And that was only the start. In following interviews she continued to push her point across, declaring, "I hope they show some love to the women of the franchise. I'd like to see that. I'd like to see them talk to each other for a change. I can count on one hand how many times I talk to the other female actresses in the franchise. I think that's kind of sad." Now at last it seems her campaigning has been heard and she may finally have the chance to star in her own film, perhaps with some of her other co-stars from previous films, such as Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, or Nathalie Emmanuel. Who would you like to see returning to the 'Fast & Furious' universe in this new spin-off?
