2016 is over. A year in which both film and television have had not only a huge impact, but a positive one. In this article, we are going to concentrate on television. Most of the time we look at the best television series that have had our eyes glued to our screens. However, we are taking a different route. How can we forget those television series that break us into an irritating sweat, make us yawn every other minute and have us itching to change the channel?
The public are tired of spin-offs, never-ending series, and those series that start and seem to go nowhere. Despite it being a positive year, we have managed to stumble across the likes of 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Fear The Walking Dead' once again.
We have tried to be as objective as possible, but at the end of the day these rankings are only our views here at Movie'n'Co. So here it goes, here is our top 10 worst series of 2016. What would yours be?
8 'Elementary'
To reinvent the character of Sherlock Holmes and bring him to New York has merit. This is essentially what happened to CBS with 'Elementary'. However, the series lead by Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu who bring Holmes and Watson to life have had the luck, or misfortune for them, of the last two seasons being the least watched show in the same year.
During the fourth season, many of us thought we were on the verge of seeing the show being cancelled, but no, instead we have seen the arrival of new characters such as the father of the main character which has certainly managed to convince us that its not stopping anytime soon. So yes, the channel opted to give the show another chance, which means we have to wait to see all the episodes of the following season to see whether it really does become a monumental disaster.
7'Vampire Diaries'
Nina Dobrev's protest affected the progression of the seventh season. However, this wasn't the only reason why the season has been damaged, just as it's viewers continue to repeat, the series "is becoming boring". They have spent years lengthening the plot, since 2009 to be precise, so it is completely normal to feel that the surprise factor has disappeared over time. Furthermore, with long lasting seasons (around 20 episodes), they have tended to extend the stories to keep the viewers waiting, resulting in both a seventh and eighth season.
Despite the length of the series, 'Vampire Diaries' continues to be a popular show with a loyal audience. For this, we are happy it has decided to take action on the issue and end with its eighth series. We hope it ends on a high.
6'Fear The Walking Dead'
The spin-off to the successful series 'The Walking Dead' lifts both passion and boredom. For the more hardcore fans of the zombie world, the series has become a good way to kill waiting time between seasons of the original. However, being as objective as possible, we have to say that the first set of episodes didn't really convince us, meanwhile the second season has also showed us that it is a long way from its predecessor.
In this season, neither the protagonists or the plot, that revolves around a family on a boat on the high seas, have managed to satisfy the public. The slow pace of the first few episodes seems to be an attempt to create a sense of tension and suspense which hasn't seemed to work. However, towards the end it did pick up its rhythm, and seemed to take a few interesting turns.
5 'Easy'
It seems that currently Netflix is the most reputable viewing platform out there. Not only for revolutionising the market for product consumption, but also with the content and services it provides. However, not everything is perfect, and in this case the finger is pointed at the series 'Easy', an eight episode series that revolves around the emotional and physical relationships of different characters.
'Easy' is easy. It seems Joe Swanberg didn't overcomplicate things when creating the show. The script is easy, easy situations, and actors that help to sum all this up. We were hoping for a bit more than this, so that's why the show has made its way into our ranking.
4'Once Upon a Time'
Despite the slight improvement that 'Once Upon a Time' showed at the end of its fifth season, the lack of innovation and sense of repetition has lead to us placing the series just below the top half of our top 10. Is it worth ABC continuing with the adventures of Emma Swann? Us as viewers think probably not. We hope that the essence of the first few seasons extend throughout the sixth season, if not we could be bidding farewell.
3'Fuller House'
The followers of the spin off of 'Full House', the popular that appeared on screens from 1987 to 1995, are in luck because even before the episodes for seasons two of 'Fuller House' have been released on Netflix, a third season has already been announced. For those that like to go back in time and have a sense of nostalgia, we don't understand how this story hasn't had much success.
Perhaps the thrill of the original series hasn't had the same effect with the spin off, as with the majority of spin offs they rail to add many new aspects to the previous series. The lack of reinvention does mean that it makes it into our ranking.
2'Shadowhunters
Someone actually thought "if it doesn't work on the big screen, it will on the small screen" and then decided to launch 'Shadowhunters', Cassandra Clare's literary saga on television three years after its failure in cinemas. The story, which we already know, has not been altered or improved and is comfortably worse than its predecessor.
1 'Lucifer'
The Prince of Darkness takes the top spot in our rankings for the worst series of 2016. 'Lucifer' tells the story of how the Devil resigns his throne in Hell to visit Los Angeles as he finds himself helping to resolve mysteries and catch criminals.
The series has a macho sense of humour, a predictable script and a cast that sometimes seem to overact. It is certain that, despite its simplicity, the story could have provided some interesting developments, however all in all it has failed to capture the publics attention.
