'Twilight' was not only a successful franchise, but it also served to kick start the careers of its stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. The British actor was previously known for his role as Cedric Diggory in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', while Stewart, who already had a more prominent acting career, had been working with David Fincher in 'Panic Room' and with Sean Penn in 'Into the Wild'. Both young actors then had the chance to bag their first leading toles in a large commercial film. Now both have become successful and prestigious actors, achieving fame due to this legendary saga.
A Global Success
The first film premiered on 21st November 2008 in the US, achieving a huge box office success of nearly 400 million dollars, while the second film, 'New Moon', followed with almost double the profits at over 700 million dollars. Adding to that the 698 million dollars from 'Eclipse', the 712 million from 'Breaking Dawn: Part 1' and the 829 million from 'Breaking Dawn: Part 2', the saga achieved a total of nearly 3400 million dollars in box office profits, making it a huge success.
The five films follow the love triangle of teenager Bella Swan, the ageless vampire Edward Cullen, who is permanently stuck at the age of 17, and the werewolf Jacob Black. The films are based in the four novels written by Stephenie Meyer: 'Twilight', 'New Moon', 'Eclipse', and 'Breaking Dawn'. The last book was split into two parts, following suit from other franchises such as 'Harry Potter'. The first film was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, the second by Chris Weitz, the third by David Slade, while the final two were under the care of Bill Condon.
