It's been 21 years since the Spice Girls took the world by storm with 'Spice up your life', but that doesn't mean they're far from our memory. On the contrary, their advocation for 'girl power' is more relevant today than it was back then, and so it's no surprise that many people believe a comeback is on the horizon. Truthfully, the girls will be returning but not exactly as you may be expecting.
Despite splitting back in 2007, the girls re-united for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London, and now, Variety have released news of a comeback of sorts: the girls will be lending their voices to the world of animation.
According to the outlet, all of the girls have given the go ahead for an animated film based upon their group. The film will star each of the five girls Posh (Victoria Beckham), Scary (Melanie Brown), Baby, (Emma Bunton), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm) and Ginger (Geri Halliwell) in animated form. As well as possessing the same key characteristics as their real-life counterparts, the characters will also be voiced by the Spice Girl to which they correspond.
A source close to the group has revealed the girls are "fired up about the idea", and hope that a film is just the beginning. "The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They're the most successful girl group on the planet. It's just what Marvel or Disney needs".
For now, the girls' manager, Simon Fuller has been pretty tight-lipped about it all, but we bet he'll be among the first to reveal the news when everything's set in stone.
The Spice Girls in Cannes
This new project doesn't mark the first time the girls have dabbled in film, back in 1997 they starred in 'Spice World', a documentary style fiction which saw the group tour around London. Despite its welcome reception on behalf of the public, the same couldn't be said for the critical responses. The film was presented at Cannes Film Festival the year of its release, proving just how iconic of a group the Spice Girls really were. Will they be able to replicate their success with their new project? We sure hope so!
