Taking advantage of the proposed success of 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' this summer will be 'The Meg', which will tell the story of a long extinct, giant shark who makes a comeback in present day. The film is based upon the 1997 novel written by Steve Allen and is set to hit UK cinemas on 10th August.
Jon Turteltaub, known for 'National Treasure' and 'The Kid' has directed the exciting, subaquatic project that's set to dive between action, thriller and science-fiction. Jason Statham will play protagonist, Jonas Taylor.
The British actor will be playing an ex-naval officer who's called upon to come to the rescue of a team of scientist trapped in the depths of the Marianas Trench. The seemingly simple rescue mission is turned on its head when their activity disturbs a Megalodon, a prehistoric, giant shark, that's not only lurking nearby, but intent on making Statham and co its meal.
More shark films on their way?
Whilst we might have once thought that films about creatures of the deep were a thing of the past, we now stand corrected. If the Mosasaurus from 'Jurassic World' taught us anything, it's that aquatic monsters are here to stay, at least on the screen that is.
We'll have to wait and see if 'The Meg' can hold its own in the long list of films about sea monsters, but the good news is, it's less than 4 months away. After all, no summer is complete without a shark film!
