One week after winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the Second World War anti-hate satire 'Jojo Rabbit', Taika Waititi is heading back to work with his latest parodic project. According to Slashfilm, the New Zealander and filmmaker is allegedly working on a satirical series that could star the British actor Jude Law, who audiences may know from the 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Fantasic Beasts' sagas, in the leading role.
Once more, Waititi aims to subtly pull back the layers of pretension and hypocrisy surrounding society with his characteristic mix of humour and incisive social commentary. His target this time, however, hits a bit closer to home than his recent World War Two picture did in its focus on the extravagance and drama of Hollywood filmmakers. Although Jude Law's involvement in the project remains a rumour at this early stage, it is speculated that he would portray a director attempting to create his own cinematic masterpiece amongst the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Despite this intriguing premise, both Waititi and Law currently have a considerable number of professional commitments in front of them, with Waititi set to film 'Thor: Love and Thunder' and Law ready to begin shooting for 'Fantastic Beasts 3'. These films could form an obstacle to the creation of this new series, currently known as 'The Auteur', which would be produced by Showtime and co-written by Peter Warren.
Taika Waititi: An Expert in Satire
It remains to be seen whether or not the formidable duo of Waititi and Law succeed in getting this project off the ground and giving the audience a tongue-in-cheek glimpse into the happenings behind the Hollywood cameras. Following the success and rave reviews of Waititi's previous efforts such as 'Jojo Rabbit' and 'What We Do In The Shadows', it's safe to say that Waititi has established a name for himself in the industry as a master of modern satire, though 'The Auteur' would be the closest to satirising his own profession that the actor, writer and director has ever come. Though this new project would undoubtedly poke fun at the industry, Waititi's presence at the recent awards season confirms that his comedic prowess has secured himself a place both in front of and behind the camera, regardless of how many hilarious quips he makes at its expense.
