It is no secret that the 70th edition of the Emmy Awards show had the most unexpected star. Producer, Glenn Weiss, did not only succeed in taking home the award for Best Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, he also abandoned his acceptance speech in order to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. However, although the moment seemed to show careful preparation on the part of Weiss, he has confirmed that he didn't actually have a plan B for if he didn't win the award.
Entertainment Weekly has collected some of Weiss' behind the scenes statements which confirm that, although he had not prepared anything for if he did not win the award for his category, either way, he did intend to propose in an equally surprising manner. "To be honest with you, there was no plan B. If this didn't happen exactly in this way, something else equally big and surprising would've happened", he explained. When asked in what other ways he may have proposed, he replied: "I suppose at the [Governors] Ball, or at In-N-Out Burger, which is our staple after-awards shows".
Apparently the director of the Emmy Awards, Hamish Hamilton, did not know what Weiss was planning. The winner said that he did not feel right to share his plans with Hamilton, as they were both in the same category. Something that does remain clear in this interview is that he and his wife-to-be are going to celebrate this engagement in style. "I think we'll probably hit more parties than we thought we were going to hit tonight. I think we're going to celebrate. Probably it's going to be a long night", he said.
A life full of award shows
Glenn Weiss and Jan Svendsen met in 2001 and have been working together for 10 years. Among their several projects is the Tony Gala: "Our lives came together because of the Tonys and have centered around this awards show environment ever since". Now we are only waiting for the happy couple to name a date to say their final vows.
