'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' can be criticised for many reasons, some of which are completely absurd. A popular belief is that the film's lack of success is due to the participation of and focus on female characters in the plot.
The idea is thought to be so rife that there are already groups online ensuring the latest installment to the 'Star Wars' saga gets the low rating they believe it deserves. One group even boasts having been able to hack the critic website, Rotten Tomatoes, in order to edit film's rating. While that is shocking, what's worse is that there's a version of 'The Last Jedi' available for download online in which the female characters have been removed or rendered unimportant.
The edited film is available to download widely on the internet and goes by the name of 'The Last Jedi: The De-Feminized Fanedit'. The description accompanying the edit explains how the creator has managed to cut out most high ranking female characters, as well as downgrade Leia's ranking. Laura Dern's character has been cut from the film completely, whilst blue milk no longer exists and Chewbacca ends up eating a porg!
As a consequence of all of the editing, the edit only has a runtime of 46 minutes, and according to the creator, "it can now at least be viewed without feeling nauseaus (sic)". The individual, who also wrote the edit's description, continued "at least the intro sequence is now very watchable and actually much cooler without all of Leia's nitpicking".
The real 'The Last Jedi'
Despite the concerns over 'The Last Jedi', the film was still one of the best performers at the box office for 2017. Just last weekend, the total income for the latest 'Star wars' film beat 'Beauty and the Beast', which had, up until now, held that record. The eighth episode of the saga brought in just over $1.2million worldwide and $595,500 in the US alone. Whilst they are impressive figures, 'The Last Jedi' still doesn't come close to the success achieved by 'The Force Awakens' back in 2015.
