For more than forty years George Lucas' 'Star Wars' universe has occupied pride of place in the hearts of science fiction fans. There are an infinite number of characters who come and go from the eleven live action films, but one of the most iconic characters, appearing in almost every single film, is the humanoid robot C-3PO. Played by Anthony Daniels, the droid appeared for the first time in 'Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope', alongside the equally iconic R2-D2 (Kenny Bakertexto enlace).
Daniels has worn the golden suit of C-3PO ever since 1977, but yesterday he announced his farewell to the character on Twitter, leaving fans to understand that 'Star Wars: Episode IX' will be the droid's last ever appearance.
Today was 3PO's last on Episode IX. He's sad - so am I. But we're so proud to have worked with such a lovely, talented cast & crew lead by J.J. & Kathy. I'll miss everyone but I'm glad to know that we've been making something exceptional together, to share with the waiting world.

This is not the only recent farewell in the 'Star Wars' saga; when Carrie Fisher sadly passed away last December, it meant that writers of 'Episode IX' had to alter the script and use old footage from 'Episode VIII' in order to give Princess Leia her final farewell appearance in this last episode in the trilogy.
A New Star Wars
While it seems that this thread of the 'Star Wars' story is drawing to an end with the release of the ninth episode, Disney have promised more spin offs in the franchise. Among the projects are two 'Star Wars' series which are being prepared for the new streaming platform, Disney+: 'The Mandalorian' and an untitled prequel series about 'Rogue One's Cassin Andor (Diego Luna). A return of the animated 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' has also been confirmed, but for now no date has been announced.
Perhaps the most exciting of all is the confirmed new trilogy, directed by Rian Johnson. While most details about the release are being kept tightly under wraps, we do know that it will introduce entirely new characters and that the first film is not expected until after 2020.
