Only a few weeks ago, on the 12th November, Stan Lee, the father of characters such as Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four, sadly died at the age of 95. His work with Marvel changed the history of comics and superheroes forever. Although we were aware of his various health problems in the last few months, TMZ has now published the cause of death of the comic genius.
Lee was struggling over the past year with several moments of delicate health. In February of 2018 he was committed into hospital for breathing problems and an irregular pulse. After testing negative for various illnesses, he was discharged early, and only a few hours later he reassured the public in an interview that he was "great". Weeks later, he admitted to TMZ that he was suffering from pneumonia, and that he wanted to say a few good words to his unconditionally supportive fans: "I haven't been in touch with you lately, I had a little bout of pneumonia I've been fighting, but it seems to be getting better. But I want you all to know I'm thinking of you, of course I always think of the fans, and I hope you're all doing well... and I miss you all. I miss all your enthusiasm. I miss all the notes and the photos and the emails I used to get. [...] And I want you to know that I still love you all. I think that Marvel and Spidey and I had the best group of fans that any group in the world ever had. And I sure appreciate it."
Now it is via that same media outlet that the true cause of death has been uncovered. According to TMZ, the creator of a large part of the Marvel universe died due to "heart failure and breathing issues". They has the chance to look at Stan Lee's death certificate, which also stated that the man was suffering from "respiratory pneumonia".
The Last Meeting
Kevin Feige, the executive producer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also has recently shared some words of remembrance for the storytelling legend, whom he says he thought would "live forever". Speaking about his last meeting with the creator, Feige stated that the last time he saw him "he was slightly more wistful than I'd seen him before. He talked about the past more than I had ever heard him talk about the past. So maybe on some level, he knew [that his time was running out]". Despite this, Feige highlighted the man's relentless sense of humour. In their first meeting together Lee joked, "I know you want me to star in the next movie, but I have to just stick to the cameos. You'll have to leave the starring roles to the other actors. I'm sorry". Just as Feige put it, overshadowing superheroes is something that only "a character like Stan Lee could easily do".
