'Modern Family', one of the most long-running sitcoms on today, recently waved goodbye to the quirky, ragtag Dunphys and Pritchetts after 11 years on the air. Having wrapped the final scenes a few days ago, the cast and crew went about saying goodbye to the series that defined their past decade with an emotional farewell party. Sarah Hyland shared her photos from the event on Instagram, amongst which was a picture of her alongside her on-screen sister played by Ariel Winter. Despite Hyland's love and well-wishes in the caption, the comment section told a different story, with several users stepping up to criticise Winter for wearing a partially sheer dress. Sisters have got to stick together, so Hyland wasted no time in defending her co-star.
Hyland and Winter, who play sisters Haley and Alex Dunphy in the series, posed together in black dresses as they celebrate 11 years of the sitcom. "I love these people with all my heart", said Hyland alongside a reel of photos that range from depicting laughter to emotional goodbyes. "11 years together is proof you and your TV sister will start wearing the same outfit, siblings for life will be made, and you'll always fight over the same professor. We'll always be Dunphys and we'll always have each other". Despite both women featuring in the picture, it was only Winter's choice of outfit that received criticism in the comments.
"What was she thinking...seriously", wrote one user in reference to Winter's dress. This disdainful judgement of Winter and her choices led Hyland to immediately come to her defence in a reply. "That she's a sexy and confident woman", Hyland clapped back. "Everyone that is making a negative comment about my sister can back the f**k up because I WILL NOT tolerate it!".
Hyland's shut-down of the hateful commentators was backed up with 7 thousand likes and a wave of comments praising both her and Winter. "Good for you! Please keep standing up for her because this is ridiculous", wrote one follower. "She looks great and so do you", agreed another. Hyland's fiancee and former 'Bachelorette' contestant Wells Adams also waded through the controversy to speak up in support of both women: "You ladies both look [fire]!"
A Broken Record for Winter
Ariel Winter has dealt with more than her fair share of critics and trolls targeting her body image and style over the years. The actress, now 22, has spent years forced to listen to the cruel opinions of haters across social media. A particularly memorable example back in 2017 came when, upon attending a press conference for 'Modern Family', the actress was criticised for wearing a short dress with a cut-out at the chest.
Winter proved that she did as good a job at defending herself as Sarah Hyland did when she offered up this response against an onslaught of negative comments: "Why TF does anyone care that I didn't dress casual like everyone else for the panel? Why do I have to be like everyone else? Why can't people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want? Wear whatever you want people! As long as you feel good about yourself, that's all that matters. I know I did. Don't ever let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself. Rant over".
