With the last few months of 2018 filled with work, Nicole Kidman finds herself promoting her two latest films, 'Destroyer' and 'Boy Erased', which could give her her fifth, or even sixth Academy Award nomination. The actress wrote an article for the magazine The Cut, in which she spoke about the #MeToo movement and her experience with Tom Cruise during the years that they were married.
Regarding her current role in Hollywood, Kidman has highlighted that she tries to do everything she can to carry out difficult projects, including the acclaimed series 'Big Little Lies', in which she is both producer and protagonist and whose second season is close to being released. She said, "My power in the industry is being able to go, 'Can we get this made?' And people saying, 'We'll give you some money.' And then I get to make the choices: I want this person cast, I want this director."
The actress also spoke about her own experiences of sexual harassment, but did not give any details about inappropriate conduct in the article, saying that she preferred to channel her experiences through her work."Of course I've had #MeToo moments - since I was little! But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I'm open and raw. I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into, used - and I'm not just talking about sexual harassment. I'm talking about loss, death, the full array of life."
Related to this, the actress said that during the time that she was married to Tom Cruise, she managed to avoid sexual misconduct in the workplace, but that it was not due to her own power in the industry at the time: "I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me - it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it's almost like I had to grow up."
Despite these statements, Kidman also made it clear that the reason that she rarely speaks about her romance with Tom Cruise is "because I'm married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful".
'Destroyer', a Complicated Project
On speaking about the new film in which she is starring, 'Destroyer', Kidman recognized that it was a difficult project to carry out: "'Destroyer' was hard to get made. You have a female director, Karyn Kusama. You have me in a lead role as an avenging undercover cop who looks the way I look in that movie - not glamorous. It's about a very complicated, angry woman. People are not going, "We can't wait to make this film!""
'Destroyer' will be realized in the US on 25th December, and 'Boy Erased', from which she has a chance to win an Oscar for Best Secondary Actress, will be released in cinemas in January 2019.
