It's not the first time a promotional poster for a film has caused controversy, nor will it be the last time. That said however, the new poster for upcoming film, 'Mother!' does not sit well with many on social media. The poster depicts protagonist, Jennifer Lawrence with bruises covering half of her face, and many are unhappy because it uses domestic violence as one of its selling points. Even if the poster is an accurate portrayal of what happens in the film, this type of promotion isn't ethical.
Wow fuck this image though. https://t.co/fHgAA13wCD

The new mother! poster looks like those ads for domestic abuse charities, so maybe they should, indeed, not!

The world is really trying to make me retroactively hate that movie.
The new psychological thriller by Darren Aronofsky cannot seem to escape the hate: it has received many critics. Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Jennifer Lawrence mentioned how, "people either love it (the film) or they absolutely hate it.", although she has been less than patient with its haters. Cinemascore, an organisation that asks viewers to rate films once they've viewed them, have given 'Mother!' the lowest possible score.
Aronofsky's work is surrounded by so much negative criticism, not even including the awful promotional poster, that we're left wondering whether that was the aim to begin with.
The movie is already doing poorly. I guess for them, there's nothing to lose. Even bad publicity is still publicity.

Controversial Jennifer Lawrence
Wherever Jennifer Lawrence goes these days, it's almost a given that controversy will follow. The actress was targeted for 'X-Men: Apocalypse' promotional poster not too long ago, in which her character, Mystique is being strangled by the villain of the film. At least, the production team for that film apologised, which more than can be said for the team behind 'Mother!'.
As innocent as she might seem, controversy does not just happen to Lawrence: she's also been the creator of her problems. On the 'Graham Norton Show', Lawrence admitted to "scratching her ass" against a sacred rock in Hawaii, which then fell down a slope much to the disgust of the local indigenous population. The actress attempted to spin a funny twist on her story, highlighting the lack of respect she has for other cultures.

Lawrence soon apologised in a post on Facebook.
