Ever since 'Friends' became available to stream on Netflix, the show has been the target of a number of complaints, with viewers, many of whom are watching the series for the first time, accusing it of being sexist, homophobic and fat-shaming. None of the cast have spoken up against the hate, until now. Matt LeBlanc, known for his role as Joey Tribbiani, has defended the show that launched him into stardom following its 10 seasons.
Majority of the accusations revolved around how the show repeatedly joked about sensitive issues, such as Chandler's transgender father, Ross' lesbian ex-wife, and Monica's obesity. The show has also received criticism for its lack of diversity: the six protagonists are all white. In an interview with the BBC, LeBlanc had the following to say: "I've heard those rumours too about people taking pot shots at 'Friends', but I don't want to get into that. I disagree with all that... 'Friends' was about themes that stand the test of time - trust, love, relationships, betrayal, family and things like that".
LeBlanc's comment hasn't stopped the debate on social media however, with some fans not happy with the series, and others defending the beloved show. A handful of fans have hit back at the criticism by highlighting how despite being separated, Ross and Carol maintained a close friendship enabling the two to care for their son. Additionally, when Monica and Chandler get married, she manages to convince her other half of the importance of inviting his father to their wedding, emphasising that he'd only regret it in the future. For his part, Chandler eventually comes to the realisation that despite his fraught relationship with his father, the important thing is that he is loved.
Despite all of that, 'Friends' has been one of the most watched series of all time and the popularity of the show has continued today with the characters, the storylines and the humour still managing to amuse audiences.
Matt LeBlanc still watches 'Friends'!
In another interview, the actor was asked whether he watches the show with his daughter, to which he responded: "Sure. It's still on all the time, so we'll stop and watch it if we're channel surfing and it pops up. She loves to ask me questions about it. She'll say: 'Was that real? Did you really eat that? What did that taste like? Ooh, you ate that off the floor? That's gross! You're so funny, Dad'. It's fun to sit and watch it with her. She used to call it The Joey Tribbiani Show - but now she knows to call it Friends". How adorable!
