'Suicide Squad' was an almost universally accepted disaster on nearly all fronts, but one of the few redeeming aspects of the film was Margot Robbie's portrayal of the crazily compelling Harley Quinn. By now you have most likely heard the rumours about the antihero's own spin-off film, 'Birds of Prey', coming to cinemas in February 2020, but Robbie has given us a little preview into the character's new look:
This is the first image of the actress in character as Harley Quinn and we can already focus on one single important change in her attire: the famous "puddin" dog collar has been replaced with a dog bone hanging on a pendant with the inscription "Bruce". It might simply be a nod towards the super-villain's hero enemy, Bruce Wayne, but could also suggest some new interaction between the characters. It could also potentially be a little honorary reference to Bruce Timm, the artist in charge of the 2017 animation 'Harley Quinn and Batman'.
For now it doesn't look like any men will be joining Robbie's team in 'Birds of Prey' as the confirmed cast is exclusively female: the dangerous assassin, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the skilled fighter, Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Together they will be going up against Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor, and hitman Victor Zsaz (Chris Messina). The film will be directed by Cathy Yan and will continue in the DC Extended Universe.
The Characters
Harley Quinn's new look is not the only exciting news regarding 'Bird of Prey'. We also have the film's first teaser trailer in which we get a quick glimpse at the characters (and by quick, we mean lightning fast)...
The teaser introduces us to Huntress, dressed in black and armed with a crossbow. This character has had many different versions in the comic books and even at one point was a part of the Justice League. Black Canary has her face hidden behind a microphone as if she were about to start singing, and Rennee Montoya holding a screwdriver, looking less than friendly. The small Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) appears at the end, looking innocent with her arm in plaster. Daughter of a pair of murderers and a proficient in martial arts, it would do not to underestimate this Batgirl.
As we already know, the main villain in the film will be Black Mask, known for his skill both with weapons and physical combat. His power also comes from his extraordinary ability to find his enemies' weaknesses. Together with Victor Zsaz, a sociopath and serial killer who usually arms himself with a knife, he will confront the team of super-antiheroines.
