Disney is known for its ability to sweep the floor and overtake everyone in its path, coming in first every time. And that is just what it is doing with its latest announcement that now, as well as speaking of attractive proposals such as a new live-action 'Star Wars' series directed by Jon Favreau, or a story based on 'High School Musical', among its many projects, some of the most beloved heroes and villains will be given the chance to hit the screen. In an exclusive interview with Variety, it was announced that Disney is also in the development of some miniseries focusing on the stories of well-known Marvel Universe characters, including Loki and Scarlet Witch, which would be released on Disney's own streaming service.
The idea would be to explore in greater depth the story of these characters who have not been granted their own individual feature film, as is the case with the characters played by Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen. Everyone is hoping to see this actors return to these roles, who have been so dearly loved by fans of the comic series and films alike. The budget proposed for these television series will be almost as much as is proposed for the big studio productions. Furthermore, the publication adds that each miniseries would have between six and eight episodes, which would be produced by Marvel Studios and would be written with supervision from the guru of Marvel: Kevin Feige.
It is clear that this omnipotent multinational entertainment company is determined to go for everything by signing some of the most loved characters in its repertoire and allocating a significant some of money to the venture. The figures are among the hundreds of millions for this new 'Star Wars' series and around twenty five million for the films which have also been proposed, specifically for this streaming platform (for example, the live action 'Lady and the Tramp').
A Deserving Hero
Hiddleston's character, Loki, is one of undeniable charisma and charm, and in dark times (before such a powerful villain as Thanos) this character proved to be a most luxurious opponent. Loki has been granted a fair amount of screen time (although he is still yet to star in a film of his own), however, the same cannot be said for the Scarlet Witch, who fans feel has been unjustly underrepresented, and are at a loss as to why this powerful Avenger has been wasted thus far. Although 'Avengers: Infinity War' compensated slightly for the lack of character development, showing some of the awesome powers Scarlet Witch has, we are still waiting for Olsen's heroine to be given her own story arch.
So, on one side we have heroes such as Iron Man and Captain America who have their own entire film sagas, Disney will stake all on a miniseries which, although we have yet to know the plot, taking into the account the budget and the apparent ambition, it will reach out to the very limits of the Marvel Universe and unite the stories. Netflix already features some Marvel series, such as 'Daredevil' or 'Jessica Jones', but nothing that we have seen here has been connected to what we see on the big screen in the film world. Perhaps finally all the plot arcs will feed into one another?
