While James Cameron recently spoke out about Marvel, it fell to associate producer, Jon Landau to discuss at length what's to come from the upcoming Avatar sequels. Speaking on the 20th Century Fox Panel at CinemaCon, Landau let on that diversity will have a big role to play.

 'Avatar'

According to Indiewire, the sequels, beginning with 'Avatar 2' in December 2020, will showcase different races, ethnicities and beings of all colours, as opposed to the original film back in 2009.

"On the first 'Avatar' film, we met one clan of Na'vi, so a very isolated part of Pandora. We had an opportunity with science fiction to be a metaphor for the world in which we live. So we meet diverse clans in the [future] movie[s], we see a whole wide range of environments, and really create an immersive experience, especially when we go under the water".

Speaking of James Cameron, Landau revealed he's working very hard on the sequel to the highest grossing film in cinematic history and that they're putting a lot of effort into filming in environments as complex as the seabed. "We're performance capturing underwater in a giant tank, with a wave maker. I don't think anyone's done that before".

Kate Winslet underwater

Oscar award winner, Kate Winslet is set have a role in the sequel. The actress previously worked with Cameron on 'Titanic' and later publicly complained of having suffered from hypothermia as a result. Landau hinted the majority of the upcoming film will take place underwater, so we asume she's put her reservations aside for now.

 Kate

Upon request, Winslet learned how to free dive, and from the get go, the crew have been able to see her at work through the portholes. "Kate was able to hold her breath for more than three minutes underwater, capturing performance", and even then managed to flash a smile to those watching. "She just made this look so easy, she came in and nailed the Na'vi language, and all of that". The actress will be playing Ronal, a character Cameron has described as being "part of the Sea People, the reef people".

We expect to hear more from the team behind 'Avatar' before the release of 'Avatar 2' near Christmas of 2020.
