It appears as though Netflix are moving into the business of remakes, with 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' set to be the first production of its kind from the streaming company. Idris Elba has been chosen as the protagonist, and the actor will have to undergo significant aesthetic changes in order to portray Victor Hugo's hunchback. Elba has also been named as director and producer for the remake, and he'll be in charge of music too!
According to Netflix, the production is going to be one of the service's most ambitious yet, and it's going to be a musical. The film will follow the love story of Quasimodo and Esmeralda.
Michael Mitnick, known for his work on 'The Current War', 'The Giver' and 'Vinyl', will be writing the screenplay, with the aid of some of the talents behind 'La La Land'. With big names like that involved, it seems as though Netflix are pulling out all of the stops. For now, all we can do is wait for the streaming service to reveal more information, namely a release date.
Other Netflix projects
As well as Quasimodo, Idris Elba will have a part in the upcoming Netflix production, 'Turn Up Charlie'. The new series will focus on an unsuccessful DJ who's forced to take a job as a nanny, looking after the problematic child of her famous best friend.
