Clearly, James Gunn thought we were a little too happy and decided to knock us down a bit by revealing that Groot is dead. All it took was one simple tweet to ruin our day. The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director also explained who exactly Baby Groot is: "First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son".
Shortly after breaking our hearts, the director continued that it wasn't necessarily breaking news: "The internet is like Groundhog Day every time I point out first Groot died. Baby Groot has a different personality, a different body, no memories of adult Groot & adult Groot's sacrifice actually meant something. New round of news stories & collective gasping again & again". He's right, we've known it all along, and although Kevin Feige did once reveal that Baby Groot shared Groot's memories, James Gunn has always denied it, stating they're two different creatures.
Science vs Marvel
James Gunn has continued the Twitter debate.
A botanist tweeted the director that, "Different memories maybe but all parts of a plant are genetically identical. IT'S STILL GROOT". Gunn replied that, "Even if what you say is true - and it may not be true that Groot was asexually reproduced - then you would believe Barbra Streisand's new dogs are her original dog and that is so very clearly not the case". With a retweet reading "look let's be real, we all knew this but none of us wanted to believe it's true", the director has supposedly put an end to the complaints. It's worth remembering that there's hardly ever any deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so we should be grateful that Groot's the only character we're mourning.
We'll see a slightly more grown up Baby Groot in 'Avengers: Infinity War' this April.
