Ross and Rachel from 'Friends' is and will forever be one of the most legendary couples in television history. Fans of the show were rooting for the couple for several season before they finally got together; however, their initial relationship did not go as planned and they decided (allegedly) to take a break, which resulted in their split. But the question is, was the break planned or was the whole thing a spur of the moment decision?

'Friends': Ross and Rachel's Break was Never Meant to Happen

Recently, Kevin S. Bright, the producer and executive director of the series, returned to dish some information about the Ross and Rachel split. He revealed in an interview with Metro that the break in the characters's relationship (played by Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer) was never part of the plan.

"I would say initially when [Ross and Rachel] was planned, it wasn't planned that way, that came a little bit later. It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for," he explained. Bright went on to say that it was the sexual tension created by everything which kept the pair apart which made the relationship exciting, claiming that after the pair had their first kiss this excitement disappeared.

He said that the writers later decided to make the move to split the couple because the, once everyone in the audience had their wishes come true, it was taken away, making it "so much better when they did get together" in the final season.

Could 'Friends' Return?

This information about the relationship between Ross and Rachel was not the first thing revealed in Bright in his interview with Metro; he also confirmed that in the previous August they had had a reunion in which they spoke of the possibility of a comeback 'Friends' series, meeting the characters again in their new stages of life. However, ultimately they came to the conclusion that a reboot would not work:

"If we did come back it would be the same characters but wouldn't be the same show. They're at different places in their lives; [...] wondering what they do and did the marriage last and what did the kids grow up to be like. I think that's best left to the audience."
