With the continuing possibility that 21st Century Fox will be bought by Disney, the future of X-Men is uncertain as we currently know it on our screens. Clearly this has not stopped Fox from pursuing with the great plans they have for the franchise, however, announcing several premiers over the next few years, including 'X-Force', 'The New Mutants', 'Gambit', and the newest installment in the Marvel mutants universe, 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix', which will be a continuation from the (what many felt to be) disappointing 'X-Men Apocalypse'.
After months with little information of the film and messy reshoots, the doomsayers were beginning to fear that Fox would never release it. However, in June the journalists at the CineEurope expo in Barcelona were able to get a glimpse of the very first images from the film, thus confirming that it was certainly going ahead. And now, at last, we can finally watch the trailer, which you can see for yourself below.
As is shown in the trailer, the film stars Sophie Turner ('Game of Thrones'), around whom the story centres as she unleashes her terrible powers into the world. The cast also includes the return of some of the saga's best known faces such as Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Evan Peters, Olivia Munn, Tye Sheridan, and the brand new edition of Jessica Chastain.
Sophie Turner on fire
The film centres around Turner's character, Jean Grey, and transpires in 1992, ten years after the events of of 'X-Men: Apocalypse'. The film features the debut direction from Simon Kinberg, who until now has simply been the producer and one of those main creative people in the mutant franchise. It adapts the plot from the Marvel Comics under the same name and tells the story of Jean Grey; as a child she accidentally causes a car accident due to the extremity of her power, which she is unable to control, and she then grows into a frightened and angry young woman, further losing control of her abilities as she succumbs to the power of the phoenix, with grave consequences for the mutants.
'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' was originally set to be released into cinemas in November of this year, but Fox decided to delay its release in order to carry out reshoot and add in some extra scenes. The new release date for 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' is set for 14th February 2019 in the US.
