A few days ago a woman caught her flatmate in an interesting scenario: the boy was watching the iconic 'Mean Girls' scene featuring the legendary 'Jingle Bell Rocks' dance at the Christmas show. Of course, he wasn't watching the scene simply sat on the sofa, he was dancing and copying the very moves of Regina George. The spirit of The Plastics had taken over.
Yes, 'Mean Girls' is one of the most iconic American teen movies in the past few years, and it is no mystery as to why. The 2004 film, which was based in the novel 'Queen Bees and Wannabes' by Rosalind Wiseman, and was directed by Mark Waters, starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdamas, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert in some of their most memorable roles. It had a great box office success and critics named it right away as one of the best films of its kind to date, and it became an icon of contemporary pop culture.
'Mean Girls' was not only made special because of its amazing cast, but also because the story was adapted by one of the leading comedians of the time, fresh out of 'Saturday Night Live'. Tina Fey made history with her script in an ingenious satire and great feminist voice; not only did she criticise the the clique culture of schools, but also the incredible lack of support girls were showing for one another.
And that is why, on this 3rd October, aka International 'Mean Girls' Day (when the dishy Aaron Samuels asked a smitten Cady Heron for the date), which this year also happens to be a Wednesday (when "we wear pink"), we celebrate at Movie 'n' Co by considering some of the most important life lessons that we learned at North Shore High School. Thanks to this classic film, we have had the chance to learn important phrases like "so fetch", we were informed of the necessity of wearing pink every Wednesday, and we were left dancing in our rooms to 'Jingle Bell Rocks'.
Life Lessons from North Shore High
1. Never mess with a friend's ex (this almost ends in disaster for Cady when she tries to go after Regina's ex boyfriend, Aaron).
2. A woman will always see a flaw when she looks in the mirror (even if it is only in her head).
3. Four-way phone calls are the worst (and friendships can be broken).
4. True friends always tell the truth (though maybe not quite as truthful as the Burn Book)...
5. Halloween is an excuse to dress however you want (whether that's Regina's slutty bunny costume, or Cady's scary witch).
6. You can bring any great villain down with a plan (it worked for Cady with Regina George... we're still trying with Trump though).
7. If you spend enough time acting like someone, eventually you will turn into them (as happened with Cady when she accidentally became a Regina 2.0).
8. We have to stop calling other girls "bitches" (because as said by the wise Tina Fey: if we continue, "it only makes it okay for guys to say it").
9. Boobs can be used as a weather forecast.
10. School is a jungle (and survival is key).
