With almost two dozen films, three phases and a whole catalogue full of TV series, Marvel are now looking to take their universe away from the screen. Just last week (22nd March), Disney announced they'd be building attractions inspired by the various superheroes for their three parks. The attractions will land at Disneyland, California, Paris and Hong Kong in 2020.
Disneyland Paris is set to get an attraction that unites its riders with 'Iron Man' and the rest of the Avengers. Visitors to the park this year will be able to enjoy the 'Marvel Summer of Super Heroes' event, in which various special effects and projections will be displayed. The characters will also be roaming about the park.
The attraction in California will be built in the vicinity of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' themed ride that opened just last year. In its description of the new attraction, Marvel called it a "completely immersive Super Hero universe" (The Verge).
In Hong Kong, there's plans for an 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' themed attraction that'll allow riders to interact with the superheroes. The new ride will join the 'Iron Man experience' that recently opened in the park.
A big exception
Whilst California, Paris and Hong Kong will all be welcoming the MCU with open arms, Walt Disney World, Disney's biggest theme park, won't be doing the same. The reason behind the exception is that Comcast (Universal Pictures, NBC), the company that holds the image rights to the characters, has an agreement limiting the theme parks that are allowed to use them.
Whether Disney will be able to work out an agreement to overcome the issue, we're not sure. Equally in the balance, is whether the company will be able to acquire the rights to 'Hulk' or 'Black Panther'. In the meantime, Disney are preparing for their new 'Star Wars' attraction.
