The world (or at least Twitter) was stumped this weekend by an intense debate: is Goofy a dog or a cow? The Disney character, created in 1932 and seen alongside Mickey and friends for years, has somehow become the centre of analyses and searches aiming to settle what animal he is actually meant to be.
But after a lot of debating, our question has finally been answered. Disney took charge and clarified the issue on their Twitter account, where they declared: "We're happy to settle this debate! Goofy is most definitely a dog!" But despite how clear it was that Goofy is, and always has been, a dog, social media just couldn't agree until the house of the mouse itself spoke out.
The root of this conundrum began when one user poised the question "At what age did you realise that Goofy's a cow?". They attached a video in which you can see the youngster search on google "What animal is Goofy?" and the answer, clear as day, "Goofy is a cow". Thus began the madness.
In spite of this emerging debate, many social media users were certain of the canine nature of the 'A Goofy Movie' character and just couldn't understand the doubts or the cow controversy going down on Twitter. At one point, there was even a new theory that Goofy was, in fact, a wolf. The craziest character description of all, however, came from Wikipedia, when someone changed Goofy's entry, referring to him as the "antichrist of Disney", amongst other things.
New Arguments
As one argument spawned another, the doubts about the true nature of this animated character seemed increasingly convincing, but after Disney had the final say the debate has given ways to social media users using the platform to pose other questions: "If Goofy is a dog and Pluto is also a dog, then why does one walk and talk but the other doesn't?" And it's not only this Walt Disney character sparking doubts, but other friends of Mickey, too, with one user questioning: "Why doesn't Donald Duck wear trousers?" Social media anxiously awaits Disney's answer.
