After confirming in 2015 that they were working on 'Gigantic', an animated project based on 'Jack and the Beanstalk', Disney have announced that they are cancelling the film. Ed Catmull, the Pixar and Walt Disney Animation president stated they had come to a creative block with the project.
Speaking to Movieweb, he mentioned the following: "It's impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn't working. With Gigantic, we've come to that point, and although it's a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now. We are focusing our energies on another project."
Up until now, it seemed as though we'd be able to see the Disney adaptation of the classic tale in 2020. Upon planting the beans, Jack would wake to a beanstalk in his garden, allowing him to enter a world full of giants hidden in the clouds. In the Disney version however, the giant that Jack encounters would have been female. Nathan Greno, who worked on 'Tangled', was also due to direct this film, along with Robert and Kristen Anderson-López who won an Oscar for their musical composition in 'Frozen'. Greno confessed he wanted 'Gigantic' to be "the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk", unfortunately we'll ever get to see it.
Future Disney releases
Despite confirming that a replacement for 'Gigantic' is already in the works, we don't know much about it, only that Disney hope to release the film for Thanksgiving 2020.
Until then we have projects like 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' and 'Frozen 2' to look forward to, which will release on 23rd March 2018 and 27th November 2019 respectively.
