With the destiny of many superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe up in the air until the release of 'Avengers 4', Marvel is continuing with certain future projects for its ever-growing universe. One of the films destined to hit the silver screen is the solo adventure of the Black Widow, Scarlet Johansson, whose plot synopsis may have just been leaked to the public.
Comic Book has pointed to the subscription-based website, Production Weekly, as the place where a possible synopsis has surfaced of this solo film based on the life of Natasha Romanoff, and a Twitter fan account of Johnasson shared it with the public: "At birth the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. The standalone film will find Romanoff living in the United States 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union".

Although it is still unclear as to whether this will indeed be the story we see on the big screen, what is certain is that the standalone Black Widow film will be the first in Marvel Universe directed solely by a woman, as Anna Boden (co-director of 'Captain Marvel') shares the post with Ryan Fleck. The chosen woman for the job is Australian director Cate Shortland ('Lore'), who achieved this position after Marvel interviewed seventy different female directors. Without a doubt, the Black Widow film will be an important landmark for Marvel in terms of representation of women in the world of superheroes.
Beyond Phase 3
The MCU finds itself close to the end of its Phase 3, with the upcoming release of 'Captain Marvel' and 'Avengers 4'. However, this does not mean we will be left without our favourite superheroes; after the release of the fourth Avengers' adventure, in which we will see the conclusion to their epic battle against Thanos, Spider-Man will return to the big screen in 'Spiderman: Far From Home'. The arachnid superhero is not the only one with further cinematic projects as a 'Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3' is still on the table, although it might arrive a little later than expected. In the case of Black Widow, we can expect her first solo adventure to arrive in cinemas in 2020.
