A few years after the release of 'Suicide Squad', the DC Universe is finally making way for it's female characters so that they too can dominate the big screen. Together with 'Wonder Woman 1984', also arriving in 2020 will be 'Birds of Prey', directed by Cathy Yan, introducing us to the characters of Black Canary and Huntress, who will be joining the iconic Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. This trio of women will not hold back in their fight against Black Mask, literally speaking, as the film has been confirmed to be R-rated in the United States.
Deadline has echoed the statements made by Yan at the United States-China Entertainment Summit which took place in LA. Here the directer confirmed that the film starring the three popular DC antiheroes will be certified for those above 18 in the US. This will be the first film in the Batman and Superman universe to be told with this age restriction, following the fashion which was laid out by films such as 'Logan' and 'Deadpool', which demonstrated that superheroes can also triumph showing their more adult sides. In this way, Margot Robbie has successfully managed to achieve a film with this rating, something which will mean we can see Harley more uncontrollable than ever.
This higher age rating supposedly means that we could see unrestricted action and moments not suitable for all members of the public. Yan let slip was that she decided to enter into this project after seeing the script as it "had so much dark humor to it", as does much of her work, and that she appreciated the "themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable." The women who will be at the centre of this film have been confirmed to by Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. The three are rumoured to be joined by Rosie Perez in the role of Renee Montoya in their fight against Black Mask. 'Birds of Prey' will arrive in cinemas from a place of girl power (and more than a few adult jokes) on the 7th February 2020.
Harley Quinn is Here to Stay
After her debut to the big screen in 'Suicide Squad', Harley Quinn has quickly become one of the most popular DC characters, and her name has remained on the lips of fans ever since. As well as 'Birds of Prey', Margot Robbie will be appearing as Harley (if plans do not change) in 'Suicide Squad 2', as well as in the film 'Joker vs. Harley Quinn', in which she will star alongside Jared Leto in the role of the clown prince of crime. Robbie is not the only one to be charged with the role of Dr. Quinzel, however, as Kaley Cuoco will be playing the character's voice in the new animation series, in which Harley Quinn will be the villain against whom Batman is fighting.
