Filming of the sequel to 'Avatar' has just started, and James Cameron is about to spill all on what's in store for Sully and Neytiri. EW has already released the first image of the new recruits on the film, all of them are quite young.
Surprisingly, we don't know much about these young talents, nor do we know which roles they will be portraying. What is certain however, is that some will play Jake and Neytiri's children, and the rest will make up the Metkayina clan, who now live in atolls in the ocean after being saved by a Na'vi named Tonowari played by Cliff Curtis (Fear The Walking Dead). Twelve year old Jack Champion, the young actor sat in the middle of the above photo, will play Javier 'Spider' Socorro, a human child.
A breath of fresh air
The sequel will introduce many younger characters, something executive producer, Jon Landau, believes will bring "a different kind of energy to the film" "They represent the future generation of Pandora and play a very significant role - not just in this movie but throughout all the movies.". Landau also mentioned how the sequels will silence those who believed 'Avatar' owned its success to its 3D element. "Nobody is watching 'Avatar' [on home video] or waiting in four-hour lines at Disney's World of Avatar or going to the sold-out Cirque du Soleil shows because of the film's 3-D. People respond because of the movie's characters, themes, and emotions?and we have all that again."
With filming for the sequel well underway, James Cameron spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, mentioning how the computers have been working non-stop for around six months!
The director is aiming to capture all the footage required to produce 2 films (2nd and 3rd in the saga) in one go, and then return to film the 4th and 5th installments at a later date. It is hoped that the next film will be ready by 2020, with the remaining 3 premiering in 2021, 2024 and 2025, respectively. The release date for 'Avatar 2' is set for 18th December 2020.
