Since its release in December 'Aquaman' has proved time and time again that not only is this blockbuster a hero, also a king. At the start of the month it was officially crowned as the most highly grossing film in the Extended DC Universe, surpassing 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', and now it has finally blown all record out the window, becoming the biggest ever film in the whole of DC cinema history.

Aquaman v Batman

James Wan's creation has now surpassed the worldwide profits for 'The Dark Knight Rises', Christopher Nolan's 2012 Batman film which sat on the DC thrown for seven years with profits of $1,084 million. At $1,090 million, 'Aquaman', starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, is now one of the top 25 biggest blockbusters of all time.

In its sixth week in cinemas, 'Aquaman' past the billion dollar mark and now holds the place for the third most highly ranking films of Warner Bros studios, behind only 'Lord of the Rings: Return of the King' ($1,119 million) and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' ($1,342 million). In the weeks to come it may even surpass the figure held by Peter Jackson's final instalment in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy.

A lot of the film's success is, of course, thanks to the legendary director, James Wan, whose name has been sung from the mouths of critics during the past few months. This is the second time the Australian director has taken the lead with a record breaking blockbuster, after 'Fast & Furious 7' became the most successful film in the franchise with profits of $1,500 million. Now everyone waits with bated breath to find out whether he will be returning to direct a sequel to this superhero adventure. With the success of the first, the answer is surely yes!

Wonder Woman

King of the World (bows to the American Queen)

In the US cinema-goers embraced 'Aquaman' with open arms, earning it national profits of $316 million; however this was only sixth place in the ranking of national records for the biggest DC films. 'Wonder Woman' remains the DC box-office queen in the US, taking the lead with $412 million in profits, followed by 'Batman v Superman' ($330 million) and 'Suicide Squad' ($325 million). It is already confirmed that Gal Gadot will be returning to the role of Diana Prince in 'Wonder Woman 1984' which is to be released at some point in 2020.
