A live-action remake of 'Anastasia' is heading our way. Variety recently confirmed that the project was well underway and even dropped the name of one actor set to join the cast.
Brandon Routh will be playing the last Tzar of Russia, Nicholas II, father to Anastasia. The actor is most well-known for his portrayal of Superman in 'Superman Returns', although he's also appeared in DC series like 'Arrow' and 'Legends of Tomorrow'. Routh plays Atom/Ray Palmer in the latter programme.
Whilst no official release date has yet been set, we do know a little bit about the upcoming film. The remake is set to be completely different to its animated predecessor and won't have anything to do with 20th Century Fox. After being cornered by the bolsheviks, the Romanov family are left with no choice but to surrender, but that's not before their youngest daughter, Anastasia manages to escape through a portal that takes her 70 years into the future: 1988!
Emily Carey who played young Diana in 'Wonder Woman' will play Anastasia and she'll be joined by 'War for the Planet of the Apes' star Amiah Miller. Miller will play a young American girl who befriends the lost Princess.
The rest of the team
Filming for the upcoming production began last summer, but that was only for the scenes due to take place in 1988. The scenes from 1917 are due to be filmed this April. Blake Harris is directing the film and he also wrote the script. Harris is also behind the 'The Little Mermaid' live-action remake, although we've not heard much about that film yet. 'Anastasia' is to be produced by Swen Group.
