Following its premiere on Netflix almost a year ago, '13 Reasons Why' built up a huge fanbase, and despite the storyline coming to a close with the first season, the show was so well received that a second season has since been confirmed. The big surprise, however, is that Hannah Baker will still star in the new episodes.
Dylan Minnette, who plays Clay in the series, recently sat down with Seventeen to whom he revealed a bit more detail on Katherine Langford's participation in the upcoming season. According to Minnette, Hannah will appear in the form of flashbacks and we'll be privy to never before seen footage of the character.
"I think that you'll see more interactions between Hannah and some other characters we haven't seen before", revealed the actor. "I think that's interesting because in season one, whenever there was a flashback, it was either Hannah or Clay's flashback and either Clay or Hannah or both were always in it. Now, maybe there will be a flashback they're not in and you can learn more about something else. I thought that was pretty cool", he continued.
Expanding the storyline
Using flashbacks allows the show to develop alternative storylines without jeopardising the first season. The retrospective narrative could also provide '13 Reasons Why' with a smooth transition to any storylines the show might explore beyond season 2; Katherine Langford has already confirmed she won't be participating in future seasons and so the show will have to shift its focus. "There's a whole life that Hannah had, and there's more we can learn about her. Overall, learning more about her is more important to the entire narrative", concluded Minnette.
