Plot
'Zarata', which means "noise" in Basque, is the directing debut of producer Tamara García Iglesias, with an independent film that had its world premiere on July 5, 2023 at the Festival of Marseille, where it competed in the First Film section, reserved for first films. A film in the form of indie cinema, experimental in its narrative, which mainly deals with issues of feminism or identity. It follows a black and white format in which two friends talk about work and power relations and in which the characters tell things... but they constantly wonder if that makes sense.
Its synopsis reads as follows: "How much does private life affect art? Julen uses people. The power and domination that a man exercises to make a film. Marian uses her friend June "Using friends to make a movie. Using people to make a movie. Money. Maybe a movie has nothing to do with art or storytelling, maybe it's just another way of exercising power."
'Zarata' stars Ainara Gurrutxaga, Erika Olaizaola and Jabier Barandiaran, who have put a large part of their theatrical training into the construction of the characters. García Iglesias directs, writes and edits. The soundtrack includes the songs 'lkè' by Sandra Cuesta and 'Unfamiliar Minds' by Elena Setién. The production is carried out by García Iglesias through his company Atekaleun, founded in 2018 together with Xabier Erkizia, who has produced films such as 'O Gemer' (2021), by Erkizia himself, or 'Sobre all at night' by Víctor Iriarte.
