Plot
Today, everybody knows the iconic historical figure of Pablo Picasso and many can recognise his most famous works, such as Guernica or Las señoritas de Avignon. However, whilst many people know of the great artist, far fewer are familiar with the person behind the art and his early years. This documentary explores young Picasso's early years, answering our questions of how he became the undisputed artist that he is today, what his influences were, and how and where he was educated. The documentary delves into the past to uncover Picasso's inspiration from Ingres of the artistry present in African tribal masks. Despite these diverse influences, there are three cities that stand out in his biography: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Working intimately with the three museums that showcase Picasso's work in these cities, many arts historians make guest appearances to talk about the first years of the artist's life and their effects on some of his most relevant works, tracking the evolution of Picasso's art from traditional styles of painting to the freer and more unique style that defines him today.
The documentary is directed by Phil Grabsky, acclaimed director of documentaries like 'The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan' and 'In Search of Mozart'.
