Plot

'Young Adam' is a British erotic drama written and directed by David Mackenzie. The film is based on the novel of the same name published in 1954 by Alexander Trocchi and stars Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton.

The film is set in the 1950s Scotland and tells two stories: past and present linked by Joe Taylor (McGregor), a young man who works on a barge which travels through the river from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The owner is Les Gault, who is married to Ella and have a son, Jim, They all live together on the boat.

One day they find the body of a semi-naked woman on the water. We know that Joe knew her, she was named Cathie and Joe had a relationship with her in the past. After this point, the story of Cathie's past is little by little revealed until in converges with the present. A present where Joe falls in love with Ella and has sexual encounters with her whenever they can get rid of Joe.

The tape had a modest success in the British local box office, particularly for an independent film, and also convinced part of the critics after going through numerous festivals. It won the BAFTA Scotland for Best Film and both McGregor and Swinton, as well as the director Mackenzie, also won their trophies.

Trivia

Not without my nude

The American version of the film was going to remove all of Ewan McGregor's nudes until he formally protested and they were put back in.

Too naughty for the americans

The british version contained a sex scene featuring Ewan McGregor that was removed for the American theatrical release in 2004. For its arrival to domestic video, the tape was rated R, even if they also cut a scene where McGregor performs oral sex to Tilda Swinton's characters. At least is was included on the DVD as a bonus scene.

Family shyness

It was the first film in all of McGregor's resumé in which he didn't take anybody from his family for the shoot.
