Her father, Rabi Mendel (Nehemiah Persoff), training her on Talmud in secret, masterpiece about jewish rules, traditions, habits...even that would not be respected, because women could not study that. After her father dies, she decide to adopted the name of his brother, and impersonate in a man to keep on study.
