World Champion

Story about the most important game in the history of chess. Anatoly Karpov faced as a young man a former mentor of his, Viktor Korchnoi, to defend his title as world chess champion.

'The World Champion' is a film made in Russia, the home country of Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi. It was directed and written by Aleksey Sidorov. Among the cast members are Ivan Yankovskiy as Karpov and Konstantin Khabenskiy as Korchnoi. Both will share the screen with Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Fyodor Dobronravov, Viktor Sukhorukov, Diana Pozharskaya, Aleksandr Filippenko, David Brodskiy, Viktor Dobronravov, Mikhail Troynik and Anatoliy Kot.

The film was produced by Nikita Mikhalkov's Trite Productions (Studio TriTe) and Russia-1 (TV). The World Champion' is distributed by Central Partnership in Russia, Kinostar Filmverleih in Germany and A Contracorriente Films in Spain.

On the other hand, the soundtrack of the film is original. The music was composed by Aleksandra Pakhmutova, with lyrics by Nikolay Dobronravov and performed by Sofiya Rotaru.

Aleksey Sidorov's feature film was presented in 2022 at the BCN Film Fest (Festival Internacional de Cinema de Barcelona Sant Jordi) at the Verdi cinemas in Barcelona. Its release date in Spain is June 17, 2022.
