Plot
'We're Broke, My Lord!' is a 2023 Japanese film directed by Tetsu Maeda, popularly known for titles like 'A Banana? At This Time of Night?' (2018) and 'And So The Baton Is Passed' (2021). The film represents a modern twist on a period comedy with colorful kimonos.
'We're Broke, My Lord!' is set in Japan in 1840, when each region was governed by a clan of small states headed by the shogunate family in Edo (now Tokyo). When Koshiro, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, is appointed prince of one of the clans, he discovers a debt of 10 billion yen.
Faced with this, aided by his servants, he starts selling all the unnecessary items they have while implementing a cost-saving policy to pay off the debt. If he fails, the shogunate will order him to commit suicide by hara-kiri!
With a script by Jirô Asada, Kazuhiro Inaba, and Kentarô Ushio; 'We're Broke, My Lord!' stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, who began his career as a beloved child actor and has since become a successful performer. He is joined by renowned actors in the Japanese industry such as Koichi Sato and Tadanobu Asano, who has gained international popularity for his role in the successful series 'Shogun'. Also featured is Hana Sugisaki, one of the most sought-after young actors in Japan.
The film will arrive in Spain in 2024 during the third edition of the Japanese Film Festival Online, exclusively dedicated to Japanese cinema. Thanks to its online format, we will be able to enjoy it from home and completely free.
