Plot
Set in Paris in the XV century during the reign of Louis XI, a place where gypsies and beggars living with other Paris residents, and the evil judge Claude Frollo wants to eliminate. Quasimodo is a deformed and a young hunchback bell ringer of Notre Dame cathedral meets Esmeralda, a gypsy girl who struggle for his native rights. The hunchback boy falls in love with the young dancer who build a great friendship.
Based on the popular Victor Hugo's novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". The director William Dieterle is the responsible for adapting this great masterpiece to the big screen. Quasimodo played by Charles Laughton, Muareen O'hara on the role of Esmeralda and Cedric Hardwicke as Frollo.

MGM considered making the film in 1937 with Peter Lorre as Quasimodo.
At a cost of $1.8 million, this was one of the most expensive films ever made by RKO Pictures. The Notre Dame replica alone cost $250,000.
Having worked with her in London, Charles Laughton insisted that Maureen O'Hara would be the perfect Esmeralda for the film.
