Plot
Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde) is a powerful and rich married lawyer, but he has sex with a lot of young men. Because of his job he is involved in a plea for reform of England's anti-sodomy statues but one of the persons that knows his double life threatens to publish some photos where he and a young gay man appears. Farr will try to find some people that suffer this bullying like him to help their too. All the assistance that he needs will be found in the policial detective Harris (John Barrie), who considers that law is perfect for the blackmailers. This classic was very far away of it's time, and nowadays still serving like example of the bully that LGTBI community suffer.

The word "queer"
The word "queer" is used in two contexts in this movie. Firstly in "Queer Street" meaning to be in difficulties, particularly financial. Secondly in the whitewash daub on the garage door "FARR IS QUEER" meaning he is gay.
The word "homosexual"
This was the first English language film to use the word "homosexual".
