Plot
In the world of the auctioning and trading of fine art, Morf Vanderwalt (Jake Gyllenhaal) attends an art exhibition of Miami. A famous and highly particular art critic, Morf has a reputation for making or breaking new artists in the Avant-Guard world of eager art lovers.
Meanwhile, up-and-coming agent Josephina (Zawe Ashton) finds her secret weapon: hundreds of dazzling paintings left behind after an elderly tenant in her building dies, many of which are covered with the ash of former paintings that were deliberately destroyed. Ignoring the instructions the clandestine artist, Vetril Dease, left to destroy his work, she promptly starts circulating the paintings, which soon attract the attention of prominent collectors, including her boss Rhonda (Rene Russo), Josephina's on-and-off lover Morf, and competing collectors, managers, and curators. Yet as the deceased artist's portraits gain posthumous acclaim, they also awaken something imperceptible and sinister that threatens to punish those who have profited from his work as a series of deaths sweep the community, all connected to the stolen paintings that Josephina uncovered, as the art itself begins to punish those involved in commercialising it.
