Plot
'Varda by Agnès' offers an intimate insight into the life and works of Agnès Varda, a renowned Belgian filmmaker and artist. Aged 90 at the time of shooting this documentary and passing away soon after in March 2019, Varda looks back at her long and lucrative career, from the highs of Hollywood success shared with her late husband, Jacques Demy ('The Umbrellas of Cherbourgh', 'Une Chambre en Ville'), to the lows of box office flops such as her 1995 film 'One Hundred and One Nights' starring Robert De Niro ('The Irishman', 'Silver Linings Playbook').
Varda shares with the audience her artistic expertise gained over her years of making pioneering contributions to the industry, reflecting on her three key principles of filmmaking and art which are "inspiration", "creation" and "sharing". By including clips from her most famous works and bringing in famous collaborators of her past and parent, such as French actress Sandrine Bonnaire, with whom she worked on the 1985 film 'Vagabond', Varda paints a broad picture of her intuitive artistic process. 'Varda by Agnès' is the famous filmmaker's self-portrait created through a much-loved medium of hers: cinema.
'Varda by Agnes' is the last film Varda ('Faces Places', 'Cleo from 5 to 7') worked on before passing away in 1989.
