They Cloned Tyrone

'They Cloned Tyrone' is an American sci-fi comedy directed by Juel Taylor in his directorial debut. It is a MACRO Media production which premiered at the American Black Film Festival on June 14, 2023, before being worldwide available on Netflix starting July 21, 2023.

The movie stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx. The latter is also a producer of the film. 'They Cloned Tyrone' starts when Fontaine (Boyega), a neighborhood drug dealer, is assassinated by his rival Isaac. The next morning, Fontaine wakes up in his bed without a scratch.

Then Fontaine, helped by Slick Charles (Foxx) and Yo-Yo (Parris) decide to investigate what has happened. They discover a government backed conspiration where several experiments are made on the local Black population. Then, Fontaine realizes that he is in fact a clone controlled by a white scientist (Kiefer Sutherland) and he has to confront him to try to stop these experiments.

'They Cloned Tyrone' was designed with references to the blaxploitation movie genre in mind, very popular in the seventies. In fact, the movie adopts a seventies aesthetic, even if it is set at present time. It was shot in Atlanta on the fall of 2020 and received mostly positive reviews, with praise to its oddness, humor and good chosen cast.
