Nora, the teenage daughter, is angry about leaving her friends behind. Carol, the stepmother, is trying to put on a happy face for the family, while Bill, Nora and Lucas' father, is simply excited about the adventure and mostly oblivious to the obstacles.
While Bill dreams of turning the barn into a lodge, his family has a hard time adjusting to Scandinavian life. Lucas finds a mischievous elf from ancient local folklore who lives in the barn. The elf has rules that the family must follow. When Bill ignores Lucas's warnings and does not follow sacred traditions, the elf does everything he can to get rid of the American intruders.
