Plot

The beginning of the 80s is marked by the reign of drug trafficking in Italy. The Sicilian mafia bosses send their men to fight to obtain the control over the traffic of heroin, causing Tommaso Buscetta (Pierfrancesco Favino) to run and hide in Brazil, though this does little to prevent the war from getting worse and the tensions from rising. Buscetta's enemies, The Corleonesi, lead by Totò Riina (Nicola Calì) have no mercy, and it is not belong before Buscetta receives the terrible news that changes everything for him: his children and his brother have been murdered in Palermo, and Buscetta will probably be the next target. When the Brazilian police arrests him and Buscetta is sent back to Italy, Buscetta takes a risk to protect himself and avenge his family: he betrays the vow he made to the Cosa Nostra and he meets with the judge Giovanni Falcone (Fausto Russo Alessi).

'The Traitor' is based on a true story and is directed by Marco Bellochio ('Fai bei sogni', 'Sangue del mio sangue'). Amongst the cast are Pierfrancesco Favino ('Rush', 'World War Z', 'Ángels and demons'), Luigi Lo Cascio ('La meglio gioventù'), Maria Fernanda Cândido ('Felizes para Sempre?'), Fausto Russo Alesi ('Venuto al mondo'), Fabrizio Ferracane ('Il capo dei capi ', 'Malèna')

Trivia

Conflicting release date

Giovanni Montinaro, son of Judge Giovanni Falcone's chief of security, strongly opposed the film, criticizing the choice of releasing it on the anniversary of the murder of his father and of the others involved in the attack. He let it go when Pierfrancesco Favino told him that the date was chosen by the production precisely as a way to pay homage to Falcone, his wife and his security detail, killed that day in 1992.
