Plot

'The Sweet East' is a drama film directed by Sean Price Williams, which tells the story of Lillian, a high school student who escapes during a school trip to Washington. In her getaway, she embarks on a journey and begins to discover different corners of the East Coast of the United States, while experiencing a multitude of encounters with all kinds of people and groups with different ideological perspectives. She will have to adapt to each situation to fit in and continue seeing firsthand how society works.

Among its cast are actors and actresses such as Talia Ryder as Lillian, along with Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Gibby Haynes, Earl Cave, Rish Shah, Betsey Brown, and Jack Irv, among others.

Sean Price Williams makes his feature film directorial debut with 'The Sweet East' (having previously worked as a cinematographer on films), and together with screenwriter Nick Pinkerton, they tackle ideological themes of America in a burlesque manner. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and was well received by critics precisely for its distinct and unique touch, as well as for its visual aesthetic, which resembles a filter or videos made with an old camera. This, combined with a satirical script and pressing issues of debate in the United States, resulted in the film being praised. Talia Ryder's performance as Lillian was also admired by critics, as she successfully conveyed the evolution of her character throughout her journey.
