Plot
A charismatic and domineering rancher named Phil Burbank arouses fear and respect in his community. When his brother, the simple but honest George, returns home to her new wife and her son, the squire will respond with mocking cruelty by tormenting them. Phil is malicious and homophobic and aims to destroy his brother and his sister-in-law, even inciting them to suicide and alcoholism, until an unexpected moment arrives and the possibility of falling in love looms over him while Peter, his nephew, plans to get revenge.
'The Power of the Dog' is directed and written by Jane Campion ('The Piano', 'Portrait of a Lady') based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage of the same name. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie , Keith Carradine, Frances Conroy, Peter Carroll, Adam Playa, Jesse Plemons, and Kirsten Dunst.
The film had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2021 before hitting Netflix in November of the same year. The film received widespread critical acclaim at the Festival, with special mentions for the script and direction by Campion, the performances by the cast (notably Cumberbatch, Dunst and Smit-McPhee), the photography and the soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood.
