The picture

'The Picture' is a documentary based on the mystery surrounding the famous piece of artwork: 'Las Meninas' by Diego Velázquez, painted in 1656. Over time, 'Las Meninas' has become one of the most important and widely acclaimed paintings in the history of art. The film aims to reflect on how we represent reality through images and the tendency of human beings to obsess over the transient nature of time. Through the different interpretations and viewpoints offered by the experts making guest appearances to share their love and knowledge for art, the viewer transforms into a kind of detective who must follow the labyrinth of clues dotted throughout the history of the painting.

This documentary features some of the foremost experts on Velázquez in the world as well as scholars who have dedicated their lives to sharing their personal interpretation of the aforementioned painting. Among these names stand out the historian Jonathan Brown; the curators of Prado Museum, Manuela Mena, Javier Portús and Matías Díaz Padrón; the academic Felix de Azúa, and the critic Francisco Calvo Serraller.

The documentary is directed and written by Andrés Sanz (who, amongst his other works, has directed some short films such as 'Flat Love' and 'Bedfort').
